Convert Video Files to MPEG-4 with QuickTime Pro

Using QuickTime Pro to convert MPEG‐4 (MP4)  files. 


1. On a Mac open your video file by double clicking or dragging and dropping into QuickTime player.

  • From iMovie HD access QuickTime conversion 
  • From 'Share' to QuickTime' then choose  'Expert Settings' (skip to step 3)
  • From iMovie 09 go to 'Share' to 'Export Using QuickTime' (skip to step 3)

2. Once the video is open QuickTime player go to 'File' then 'Export''



3. Select MPEG-4 from the drop down tab.



4. Then click on 'Options'



5. Under 'Video' set to encode to:


File Format: 'MP4'
Video format: H.264
Data Rate: 500 kbits/sec  (Great Quality, less decreases file size)
Optimized for: 'Download'
Image Size: '640x480 VGA' for Standard Definition content
Frame rate: 'Current'
Key frame: 'Automatic'


Under 'Video Options' choose Encoding Mode: 'Best Quality' (multi‐pass).


Use a 1280x720 image size for High Definition content with a bit rate of 1400kbps/sec.



6. Under 'Audio' choose:

Audio Format: AAC‐LC
Data Rate: 128 kbps
Channels: Stereo
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
Encoding Quality: Best


7. Under 'Streaming' Leave it unchecked.


8. Click 'Okay' choose a destination and 'Save' the MPEG‐4.10. Encoding will take a while
